Alan Shepard made his-
tory of sorts when he
became the first, and
only, man to hit a golf
ball on the moon. Using
a makeshift club made
of a six-iron head and
the handle of a rock-col-
lectinq tool, he struck two
balls. Hampered by his
bulky space suit,
Shepard almost missed
the first and it plopped
into a nearby crater. He
hit the second squarely,
and in the moon's weak
gravity, it soared into the
distance. "There it goes!
Miles and miles and
miles!" he shouted.
During more than nine
hours on the surface,
Shepard and crew mem-
ber Ed Mitchell set up a
nuclear-powered science
station, gathered soil and
rock samples and erect-
ed an American flag. To
lug their tools and col-
lected rocks around, they
used a hand-pulled cart
they dubbed a rickshaw
(shown here between the
two men). The blastoff
from the moon of the
Lunar Module Antares
was smooth and they
rejoined Stuart Roosa in
the command ship Kitty
Hawk for the return to
