Riguardo all'enigmatico titolo del film di Kubrick, ho trovato scritto qualcosa di rivelatore in un testo massonico, "Stellar Theology and Masonic Astronomy" del massone di 32° grado Robert Hewitt Brown, scritto nel 1882. A pagina 220 di una recente ristampa del libro, si legge:

[...]
Q. Is there any connection between the words "mystery" and "masonry"?

A. If, in fact, the masonic institution, as Mackey and Oliver both admit, was descended from the ancient "Mysteries," there should be some close connection between the word "mystery" and "masonery," even if the latter is not directly derived from the former. The word "mystery," which originally had an exclusive meaning, came in process of time to have three different meanings, all derived from the original one:

1.It was the name of the sacred drama which constituted the cerimony of initiation into the secret religious associations of the ancients, which where so named from the fact that the "aspirant" for initiation was blindfolded. The word "mystery" is derived from the Latin "mysterium", from the Greek μυστήριον , from μυστής , from μυϵίν , to shut the eyes. [...]

Insomma, la massoneria deriva dai misteri eleusini e delle altre tradizioni misteriche gnostiche, e la parola Mysterium, deriva dal greco e significa "chiudere gli occhi" o "occhi chiusi" (eyes wide shut, ovvero "occhi completamente chiusi"), discendendo dall'usanza di bendare l'iniziato quando viene introdotto la prima volta nel tempio. (cosa che viene fatta anche oggi durante l'iniziazione massonica del candidato di primo grado, vedi: link )
